Toyota trucks of that era are starting to get a following so maybe go Datsun/Nissan to keep the price down? If you can find one that's not a rusty hulk.

Get an older S10 and swap a turbocharged V6 into it. I'm probably going to be helping a high school friend of mine do this very thing to replace the trashed I4.

A college prof of mine swapped an LS1 into one (previously a 4 cyl as well), and slapped 2 turbos on at 9 PSI, he's going for about 500 HP.

If you compare the Ranger vs the S10 the 4.3L big boy V6 in the S10 wins every day.

I loved my first S10, though I did hop up the 4.3L with a big bore, ported heads, valves, etc. It was a tank and got me through any snow with that 4x4 in it. I'm definitely going to encourage an S10, also you can very easily do a 350 swap on one of them. There are kits that pretty much make it a bolt on setup. Also, if you stick with the 4.3, the TBI unit is the shit. Like, take the air cleaner off just to watch it spray fuel in. All kinds of fun was had in this truck:

I saw the cleanest 4 door blazer with a 350 swap I've ever seen in my life for sale last week, I wanted to buy it SO BAD. If only I had 4k at the time...

The more I look into getting one the more I really, really want one.

It's probably going to happen if I can work up the courage to deal with craigslist sellers. Of course I think I really just fear getting one then not caring about my Sonic anymore...
